Esther’s counselling tips:

• Lactulose syrup is a mild laxative that acts by drawing water into the bowel so that it gently softens the stool 
• Sometimes the medication can take a little while until it takes effect (up to 48 hours)
• The dose of lactulose varies in people and just because you haven’t had an immediate effect from the product doesn’t mean it isn’t working – just try taking a larger volume of liquid and then taper the dose back once constipation is relieved
• Lactulose needs water to work, therefore I always recommend people take it with a large glass of water
• SAFE to use in pregnancy or breastfeeding
